Gabriela García-Luna's Bio
Gabriela García-Luna is a multimedia photo-based artist, born in Mexico City and living in Canada since 2009. She holds a Bachelor of Design degree from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan.
Her first encounter with photography was during her studies of Graphic Arts and Communication in Mexico City, where she came to personally meet artists such as Manuel Alvarez Bravo and Rafael Doniz who inspired her towards a deeper interest in photography.
Since 1999 García-Luna has experimented in many different ways with photography and installation work, and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and India.
García-Luna has also been the recipient of numerous residency grants and awards from public and private organizations including the 2001 OMNILIFE Grand Prize in Photography (Mexico), the 2002 First Prize in Photography in Queretaro Libertad Third Art Contest, Mexico, and grants from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, FONCA (Mexican National Fund for Arts and Culture) and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Her work is part of public and private collections including: the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, SK, Global Affairs Canada, OMNILIFE Collection, Mexico, the Saskatchewan Arts Board Permanent Collection, the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery Permanent Collection among others. Gabriela Garcia-Luna is represented by Slate Fine Art Gallery.
